ENJOY LIFE AT SALVATION ARMY BUCHANAN LODGE

lifestyle

The Food Services Department provides nutritious, appetizing "home-cooked" meals three times a day for our Residents. We provide two seasonal menus (Spring/Summer, Fall/Winter) offering a great variety of food items. We cater to allergies, special diets and food preferences as needed.

Breakfast is a traditional meal with cold or hot cereal, eggs, bacon or sausage, and toast. Fresh muffins, cinnamon buns, pancakes and waffles are also enjoyed on a regular basis. The main meal of the day is served at noon. Supper is always an excellent choice of soup, a casserole, sandwiches and/or a salad plate. Seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables are provided. Many of the prepared desserts are home made. Snacks of fresh fruit, baked goods and beverages are offered throughout the day.

Our four dining areas offer a comfortable, home-like setting with a pleasant atmosphere. Guests are welcome to join us for meals for only $7 - breakfast, lunch or dinner. The following menus are the regular rotation of the Fall/Winter menus, which started with Week 3 on Sunday, September 24, 2023.

home-cooked meals:

"I have often witnessed how nurses, care aides, housekeeping and kitchen staff work together to make my husband Roger comfortable and happy. The meals are excellent, varied and healthy. The recreation and physical exercise programs are designed to meet the diverse needs of residents. The beauty of the building and the gardens also help residents feel at home."

The Recreation Department provides a wide variety of therapeutic recreation programs designed to meet the social, physical, spiritual, emotional and psychological needs of the residents. Programs are offered six days a week from 0900 to 1600 hours, as well as some evening programs. Programs often include but are not limited to: fitness and exercise, bus outings, baking, crafts, gardening, active games, bingo, trivia and other mentally stimulating programs. Special events include dinner parties, birthday teas, ice cream socials, and family barbecues. We celebrate various holidays throughout the year, and we host both a Spring Fair for the community every May and a Fall Fair every November. A facility-owned wheelchair bus is utilized for scenic drives, lunch, dinner outings, shopping trips, concerts and other events. The recreation team is grateful for the support of volunteers and other departments.

social & recreation activities:

Spiritual Health is available as part of the care offered to residents, families and staff. Our Spiritual Health Team assists with emotional and spiritual needs. We believe that a listening ear is one of the most precious gifts we can give. The Spiritual Health Team assists a resident in the adjustment to their new home at Buchanan Lodge and offers support in times of illness and sorrow. As members of the health care team they provide information and expertise related to end of life issues. They facilitate religious rites and ceremonies no matter which faith you practice. They are also available to pray with you and, if so desired, can assist a resident to reconnect with their own faith community.

"My parents Joe and Megan are residents at Buchanan. I am always impressed by how caring and friendly all the staff are, and how clean it is. I am happy that they are in a Christ-centred home. When people hear that they are at Buchanan, they always say, "they are in the best place, where I want to go when it's my turn." I am warmed inside reading the positive posters in the hallway and elevator. I am grateful that my parents live there at this stage of their life.
God bless you all."

Get a breath of fresh air in Buchanan's beautifully landscaped grounds. The outdoor patios are a peaceful oasis from the surrounding neighbourhood. Many of our residents enjoy the lush, green patios in the warm summer months. They are welcome to take advantage of the outdoor seating to relax or chat with friends.

Watch the garden bloom every season with a variety of flowers, herbs and plants!

The residents can get involved in helping with the maintenance of our common gardens as well as maintaining their own plant beds.
